Jamaica’s Independence Day!

Munchachos Snacks Children: World Curiosity Back to school

When Was It and What Happened?

Jamaica gained independence from Britain on August 6th, 1962. It was the first time Jamaica elected their own prime minister and cabinet. Jamaica was no longer controlled by Britain. However, the Queen is still the head of the country and Jamaica is part of the British Commonwealth.

Curious? What is the British Commonwealth? It is an organization of 53 countries that share a language, history, culture, values and law.

How Do Jamaicans Celebrate Independence Day?

August 6th is a public holiday in Jamaica! Many people go out to the streets and join parades dressed in the colours of the Jamaican flag. Do you remember what those colours are?

The Jamaica Festival is also held on Independence Day. It’s a great place for people to trade local produce. The Jamaica Festival also features the World Reggae Dance Championship and the Miss Jamaica competition.

Do you like reggae? Listen to Bob Marley, the most famous reggae musician. Leave a comment and let us know what you think!

I bet they enjoy a few Go Man-Go munchables on the way!

What About Jamaica’s National Symbols?

Jamaica’s four national symbols represent their rich history and culture

Flag

“Friendship is the only cement that will ever hold the world together” – Woodrow Wilson

Munchachos Snacks Children: World Curiosity Friendship UN Curiosity

What is International Friendship Day?

International Day of Friendship is observed on July 30th and is celebrated on the first Sunday of August.  The United Nations created the International Day of Friendship to promote the importance of friendship.

Fun Fact #1: Winnie the Pooh is the Ambassador of Friendship at the UN!

Why Are Friendships Important?

We have listed 5 reasons why we think that friendships are really important:

Live Longer: It has been proven that the stronger your friendships, the healthier and happier you will be!

Support: Everybody needs a hug sometimes. Your closest friends are there for you in good times and bad to give you the support and love you need.

Learn Loads: You learn loads from your friends by listening to them, playing with them and going on adventures with them.

Make a Difference: Your friends are the first people to join your team. Together, you can do amazing things such as: collect clothes or raise money for a local charity, play in a sports tournament, complete a science experiment.

Tell you Truth: Only your closest friends will tell you the real truth. They know you the best and are not afraid of what you think!

Thomas Aquinas once said said that true friendship is the most prized thing on earth. Do you agree with these reasons? Tell us here!

What Can You Do This Summer?

1. Go Say Hi to Your Neighbour

Whether you are at home or on vacation, the best place to start is with your neighbour. Go say hi and get to know them.

2. Go Play in the Park

… or swim in the local pool (wow, it’s so hot!) Wherever you chose to go, try go where there are lots of other children (summer camps are a great example). The more involved you are the likely you are to make new friends!

3. Find Someone Different

Finally, try making friends with someone totally different to you. They are likely to be the most interesting friends you will make.

So grab a box of Munchachos and go make some new friends this summer. Don’t forget to share!

How Does This Relate to Who We Are and What We Do?

International Friendship Day is about building ties and bridging gaps between communities and helping make the world a better place. At its very core, this is what Munchachos is all about – making children more curious about the world and its people and by doing so, more comfortable in a multicultural world. Hole Guacamole!

Munchachos Snacks Children: World Curiosity Mexico Cha Cha Chips Guacamole

(pronounced Holi Gwakamoli….)

Hola Munchachos!

Today we are going to show you how to make real deal Mexican guacamole, packed with nutrients and deliciousness!

The recipe could not be easier, so get the whole family involved.

For this you will need (feeds 6 Munchachos):

2 extra mushy, extra ripe, large avocados, preferably the Haas kind which are black on the outside and smooth and rich on the inside. If the ones you find are a little small, that’s ok, just throw in an extra one!

2 juicy limes

1 large tomato – not too soft

1 handful of cilantro (aka coriander), pick the biggest hand you have at home!

A pinch of salt and pepper

Some Mariachi music playing in the background to get you in the mood.

Now for the fun part:

Cut the avocados in half and pit them (that means take out the big pip – it doesn’t taste very good). Scoop out the delightfully mushy green flesh with a spoon and put it in a bowl. Squeeze the juice of the first lime over this and mash it with a fork. Keep some chunks in to give it texture! Cut the tomato in half and scoop out the wet interior. Wash the tomato thoroughly and then dice the tomato into small pieces – mind the tiny fingers! Chop the handful of cilantro (stalks are fine, but don’t get too much of them in there, leaves are tastiest!). Add the tomato, cilantro, salt and pepper (to taste) and the second lime’s juice to the bowl and get everything singing together! (Ay caramba!) If you have brave little ones at home, add some chilli (flakes or very finely chopped fresh jalapenos – pronounced HA-LA-PE-NIOZ!)

This is the partner in crime for our Cha Cha Chips! But, you can also enjoy it with a delicious piece of brown toast for brekkie or as a side to your chicken or fish meals!

Fun fact: Avocados are very high in omega 3 fatty acids – the good kind of fat – and contain many essential vitamins and minerals such as vitamin B5, vitamin K, fibre, magnesium and potassium!

Pro Tip #1: To avoid the browning, wrap your avocado in cling film or squeeze some lemon juice on it!

Pro Tip #2: Before cutting the limes in half and squeezing out the juice, set them down on a hard surface, open your palm and place it on the lime. Squeeze the lime and roll it backwards and forwards (pretend you’re a DJ, extra brownie points for holding your other hand by your ear!)
