Bastille Day!

Munchachos Snacks Children: World Curiosity France Bastille Day Parade

What Happened on Bastille Day?

Nearly 250 years ago, the poor people in France were very angry. On July 14, 1789 they decided to rebel against the king and queen. They entered a prison in Paris called Bastille, stole the weapons stored inside the prison and released the prisoners. This was the start of the French Revolution which lasted 10 years.

Fun Fact #1: only 7 prisoners were inside Bastille when the prison was raided.

Why Were the Poor So Angry?

The king controlled everything at the time. The king and his friends were wealthy, very powerful and could do whatever they liked. Does this sound fair?

The poor had two big complains:

  1. Taxes were too high because the king had an expensive lifestyle
  2. There was not enough food for everyone

They would chant: “Nous avons faim! Nous ne sommes pas contents!” Who knows what this means?

So What Did They Do?

The poor wanted a democratic government Do you know what a democracy is? After they raided the prison and got the weapons, they decided to fight against the king and his army. The poor were now in charge! They arrested the king and queen of France and their friends. Later the king and queen were executed.

Fun Fact #2: In a democracy everyone has a say on who will run the country and how it will be run. Democracy is a Greek word which means “rule by the people.” Ready for some Take Tzat yet?

Who Celebrates Bastille Day?

Bastille Day is celebrated by France and by many other French speaking countries.

July 14th is a national holiday in France. The most famous event on the day is the Bastille Military Parade. The parade first started in 1880.

Most people also have large picnics, fireworks, music and dance… and some Chomps Elisé, of course!

Happy Birthday America!

Munchachos Snacks Children: World Curiosity USA Declaration of Independence Fireworks

Why Happy Birthday?

July 4th is America’s Independence Day, also known as its Birthday.

300 years ago, America was part of Great Britain (also called the United Kingdom). On July 4th 1776 Thomas Jefferson wrote a letter to King George of England declaring that America was separating from British rule. This is how the United States of America (USA) was born! This letter was called the Declaration of Independence. Thomas Jefferson became the 3rd president of the USA.

July 4th is celebrated with BBQs, fireworks, parades and of course some yummy Hip Hop Pop. Sounds like a great birthday party!

Why Did America Want Independence from Britain?

The USA was unhappy with the British government. America felt that the British government taxed them too heavily. In addition, the USA had no say on the laws that they had to live by. It’s easy to imagine that the USA was pretty upset…

So What Happened?

The Americans (known as colonists at the time) began to fight back. That’s how the Revolutionary War between the USA and Great Britain began in 1775.

However, fighting was not enough. The colonists decided to formally separate from Britain a year later. Understandably, England did not accept the Declaration of Independence. The Revolutionary War continued until 1783, when the USA defeated Britain.

Fun Fact #1: When the United States gained independence, 2.5 million people lived in America. Today the population of the USA is more than 300 million!

How Does This Relate to Who We Are and What We Do?

We are all about encouraging curiosity in the world. To do so, it’s best to have an open mind and to try new things: meet new people, read, try a new Munchable… It also helps to remember that all people are all equal. Thomas Jefferson and the authors of the Declaration of Independence felt the same way back in 1776. The second sentence of the Declaration of Independence says, “… all people are created equally and have rights that include life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness”. Can you find this sentence below?

Who Were The Suffragettes?

Munchachos Snacks Children: Suffragettes Curiosity Millicent Fawcett

Who Were The Suffragettes? What Were They Fighting For?

Today in the UK, men and women have equal rights. This was not always the case! Only 100 years ago women did not have the right to vote in Parliamentary Elections. [We have elections to decide who will run the country.] Can you believe this?

The suffragettes fought really hard for women to be able vote. Most people thought that the suffragettes were crazy! Even Queen Victoria said that the fight for women’s rights was a “mad, wicked folly”. The fight for the women’s vote clearly needed some heroes and heroines! (and probably some healthy munchables to cure hunger pangs)

Fun Fact #1: ‘Suffrage‘ means the right to vote in political elections.

Who Were These Heroes and Heroines?

Two women really stood out:

Millicent Fawcett

In 1897 Millicent Fawcett founded the suffragists group. The suffragists campaigned very peacefully but did not achieve a lot despite their efforts.

Munchachos Snacks Children: Suffragettes Curiosity Millicent Fawcett

Emmeline Pankhurst

Emmeline Pankhurst created the suffragettes movement in 1903. This group of women used violent protests to get their message across.

There is a statue of Emmeline Pankhurst in Victoria Tower Gardens – have you seen it?

Compare these two very brave and motivated women. They both had the same goal but used very different tactics: peace vs. violence. Which tactic would you choose?

Fun Fact #2: Not all suffragettes were women.

Fun Fact #3: The suffragettes wore purple, white and green.

What Happened Next?

In 1914 the First World War started. Women still did not have the right to vote!

The men went to war and the women stayed at home to help their country. For many women, this was the first time they had to work. They took on the jobs that men would normally do, such as working in factories and coal mining.

By doing this, women gained a lot of respect. Finally!

Did Women Finally Get The Right to Vote?

Yes! In 1918, 15 years after the suffragettes started protesting, men older than 21 years old and all women older than 30 years old who were married or owned a house won the right to vote. 10 years later, in 1928, all women over the age of 21 were allowed to vote. Women and men finally had equal voting rights.

How Does This Relate to Who We Are and What We Do?

Thanks to the suffragette’s movement, more people started sharing their opinions. We believe that everyone’s view should be heard. The more we learn about people that are different to us, the better. We can learn new ideas and ways of thinking. This curiosity will encourage creativity. We wrote a fascinating blog about this. Curios to read more? Click here!

Munchachos lives to make children more curious about different countries and cultures. We believe that childlike curiosity is essential as the world becomes more complicated and multicultural – read more here!
